The March 2026 balance patch reshuffled the Brawl Stars competitive meta. Three brawlers got nerfed into mid-tier irrelevance. Two previously-mid-tier picks jumped to S-tier through nothing more than buff-by-comparison. This is the current ranked-ladder meta tier list, valid as of April 2026 and updated monthly thereafter.
This is the cluster article for our competitive mobile gaming pillar. If you're new to competitive Brawl Stars or unsure whether the time investment is worth it, the pillar covers the broader scene; this article is for players already grinding ranked who want immediate ladder picks.
Tier criteria
Tiers are defined by ranked win rate above Diamond III rank, weighted by pick rate. A 70% win rate at 0.5% pick rate isn't S-tier — it's a niche pocket pick. A 56% win rate at 8% pick rate is S-tier because it's actively decisive in the meta volume.
S-tier — first picks, ban-worthy
Surge is the post-patch winner. The March nerfs to Edgar and Buster left a gap in the assassin/burst-damage role. Surge fills it perfectly with stage-up scaling that punishes prolonged team fights. His Star Power that adds passive damage at stage 2 is the difference between mid-tier and S-tier; current pick rate hovers ~12% in Diamond+ Gem Grab.
Cordelius stays S-tier through every meta. The teleport-into-shadow-realm mechanic creates 1v1 isolation that is fundamentally unbalanced in objective modes. His mythic Hypercharge ability (added in 2025) keeps him meta-defining; expect bans 80%+ of competitive matches.
Bonnie jumped from B-tier on raw buff math. The March patch increased her shell-form damage by 12%, which crossed a kill-threshold breakpoint at full health. She now one-shots every B-tier brawler from full health if Star Power is active. Pick rate doubled in two weeks.
Maisie is the recovery story. Her June 2025 nerf had pushed her to C-tier; the March patch reverted half the nerf and her ranged-poke + stun combo is back to dominating Brawl Ball. Pick rate climbing weekly.
A-tier — strong situational picks
Spike is map-dependent — S-tier on closed maps, B-tier on open. His area-of-effect from main attack and Super covers chokepoints that decide objective modes. Bring him to Hot Zone and Gem Grab; bench him on Knockout.
Mortis is the assassination specialist. The March patch slightly buffed his dash distance, which reopened kill paths that had been closed in 2025. Best on diving compositions; a liability on sniper-heavy team comps.
Janet is the consistent A-tier sniper. Long range + Hypercharge that turns her into a flying mini-bomber means she dictates engagement range. Her main weakness — close-range vulnerability — is mitigated by good team positioning.
Larry & Lawrie remain underrated. The duo's split mechanic creates 3v2 advantages on objective modes. Pick rate is ~4% but win rate at high ranks is ~58%, suggesting the brawler is more powerful than the meta has caught onto.
Doug is the support meta-defining pick. His revive Super has turned every team fight into a 2-life encounter. Bring him on Brawl Ball and Hot Zone; absent on Knockout.
B-tier — playable, situational
Edgar got nerfed hard in March (heal-on-Super reduced from 50% to 25%). Still playable at Diamond, increasingly punishing at Master+ ranks. Pick him in solo queue where coordination is rough; bench him in coordinated play.
Buster took the same March nerf to Shield duration. He's still useful as a damage absorber but his protection window is now too short to commit aggressive plays around. Best as a reactive pick into burst-heavy enemy comps.
Pearl is the heat-mechanic sleeper. When her overheat lands, she annihilates squishies. The build-up time keeps her out of S-tier. Strong on closed Brawl Ball maps.
C-tier — pocket picks, niche or struggling
These brawlers all have specific maps or comps where they're decent but their general-purpose ranked viability is declining. Crow remains a low-key threat in 1v1s; Leon's invisibility is hard-countered by current S-tier, but on the right map he still works. The rest are noticeable steps below.
D-tier — avoid in ranked
Bibi, Stu, Sandy, Belle, Eve, Charlie, Chuck, Lily all have current win rates below 47% above Diamond III. The brawlers that will see balance patches in May 2026 are likely the worst of these — Bibi and Charlie are the most-requested buffs by the competitive community.
Map-specific picks worth knowing
Hot Zone (Open Business): Surge → Doug → Janet. The triple-zone control comp wins ~62% of the time at Diamond+.
Gem Grab (Hard Rock Mine): Cordelius → Spike → Doug. Cord controls the gem-pickup area, Spike walls bottlenecks, Doug revives.
Knockout (Belle's Rock): Janet → Maisie → Larry & Lawrie. Long-range dominance composition. Strong against any close-range comp.
Brawl Ball (Center Stage): Bonnie → Maisie → Doug. The Bonnie-Maisie kill threshold + Doug revive snowballs the score lead.
How to actually climb
- Master 3 brawlers, not 30. Each S-tier brawler has unique mechanics. Mastery of one S-tier wins more games than dabbling in five.
- Watch your replays after every loss. Brawl Stars saves your last 10 matches automatically. Most ranked stagnation is positioning, not aim.
- Don't tilt-queue. Two consecutive losses in solo queue = stop. The third match is statistically your worst-played.
- Run solo queue or 3-stack only. 2-stack queues into mostly-3-stack opposition above Master rank, and you'll be down a synergy lane every match.
What's likely to change in the May 2026 patch
The Brawl Stars team telegraphs balance changes in the official Brawl Talk videos. As of late April, the community-flagged candidates for the May patch are:
- Bonnie nerf — her current pick rate at S-tier is unsustainable for the design team's preferred meta diversity.
- Bibi buff — she's been below 45% win rate for 4 patches in a row.
- Edgar partial revert — community sentiment around the March nerf was harsh.
- New brawler reveal — likely a mythic-rarity legendary, expected to disrupt current Hot Zone metas.
